The link between antidepressants - - teen depression and
teen suicide - - and what you can do about it !
USA - - The FDA (Federal Drug Administration)
has been accused of suppressing the release of clinical data provided
by drug companies who produce antidepressant drugs. This unreleased clinical
data showed a potential risk for an increase in TEEN SUICIDE
using the now popular antidepressant drugs.
UK -
- The same information about teen depression and teen suicide was made
available to the general public in Britain during a review of drug company
clinical trial data in 2003 by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory
Agency (MHRA).
THINK YOU'RE DEPRESSED?
START BY TAKING A SHORT QUIZ
The MHRA, which licenses
drugs in the UK, discovered that drug company data showed teen
suicide tendencies had been as high as 3% in teen and children
test groups.
Drug companies
conducting clinical trials on antidepressants used terms like "various
psychiatric events" and "emotional
liability" to describe suicidal behavior that was exhibited
by children and teenagers with teen depression who participated in these
studies.

Antidepressant drugs used to treat teen depression
are now being reevaluated as a potential cause of an
increased incidence of teen suicide.
The use of
antidepressant drugs in Australia by children under the age of 18 is estimated
to be as high as 13,000.
An article
in the SocietyGuardian.co.uk reported that in 2002 doctors in the UK wrote
170,000 antidepressant prescriptions for children under the age of 18.
In 2003 the
antidepressant drug Efexor, made by the drug company
Wyeth, was taken by at least 3,000 British children.

Examination
of drug company clinical data has revealed that the use of antidepressant
drugs can cause your child to feel murderous and suicidal.
Your
child or teenager may be more likely to consider
committing suicide after starting this type
of depression drug therapy.
Studies have
shown that antidepressant drugs may be no more effective at treating teen
depression than a placebo. Furthermore, these drugs are generally not
recommend for use by children.
Based on evidence
that was not released by the FDA, not only may your child be at increased
risk to committing suicide if you allow him or her to use these drugs,
but other family members using these drugs may also be at risk.

- New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer filed a lawsuit
against GlaxoSmithKline, alleging the drug giant "engaged in repeated
and persistent fraud" by concealing critical scientific studies about
the safety and efficacy of Paxil used to treat depression in children
and adolescents.
GlaxoSmithKline Plc under pressure, recently published
results of trials showing the drug Paxil is broadly ineffective in children
and adolescents and could increase the risk of suicidal behavior.
Canada August, 2004 - CanWest News Service Reported
four teenagers in Canada have died by suicide while being treated with
these widely prescribed antidepressants. The most recent reported suicide
involves a 14-year-old boy who killed himself after being on Paxil for
25 days.
The
New York Post reported that the FDA disclosed during the past
ten years at least 110 American kids have killed themselves while taking
antidepressants.

"In 1991, we said there wasn't sufficient evidence to support a
link," said Jeffrey Lieberman, a professor of psychiatry and pharmacology
at the University of North Carolina and a member of the panel. "Now
there is evidence, at least in children, and I wouldn't rule out
that it's in adults, too."

These
antidepressant drugs are known as Selective
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Most studies have found that
SSRI's are no more effective at fighting teen depression than sugar
pills.
| WITHDRAWAL FROM SSRI DRUGS IS A DOCUMENTED FACT
|
YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE WITHDRAWAL
EFFECT OF SSRI'S. SOME DOCTORS WILL EVEN DENY THE EXISTENCE OF SSRI
WITHDRAWAL EFFECTS.
However, there is
an extensive library
of documented withdrawal cases.

Seven of the 10 American specialists who served on a Food and Drug
Administration panel that formally cleared the drugs of ties to
suicide say that the new information would prompt them to reconsider.

It is the
"LISS CES"
The LISS CRANIAL ELECTRICAL STIMULATOR
The LISS CES
works without using drugs by altering the level of
neurochemicals (brain chemicals) such as Serotonin and Beta Endorphin
using electric current.
|
"No, this is not electro convulsive shock therapy. Far from it.
Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) is a type of low-voltage
electrical stimulation which offers a non-pharmacological means
of correcting neurotransmitter imbalances in the brain in order
to facilitate the relief of depression, anxiety and insomnia, including
when these symptoms are associated with addictions."
Robert J. Picker, M.D.
ISSSEEM Newsmagazine, Winter 1993
|
Depression, mood management,
Anxiety/Phobic Disorders and insomnia are all classified as serotonergic
symptoms.
The LISS CES has a
proven record of being able to alter serotonin and other brain chemicals
enough to lift depression in as little as two weeks after beginning
treatment.
The LISS CES was designed
and developed by Dr. Saul Liss with degrees in Biomedical and Electrical
engineering and Bernard Liss. Dr. Liss is an international lecturer
on the effects of electrical magnetic stimulation in humans.
|
"In my opinion the Liss Cranial Stimulator alone with no
other intervention brings at least 50% of people out of
depression within two weeks. We also know that there are striking
improvements in the neurochemical profile, particularly in beta
endorphins and serotonin, in these patients when they have been
treated in this way."

Q: I told my doctor about the
LISS CES and he said it sounds like a TENS device?
A: The LISS CES is approved for sale
by the FDA as a prescription device under the CES device classification.
However, it cannot be compared to a typical TENS device.
The LISS CES wave form is comprised of a unique combination of frequencies
and pulse timing that is completely different from a typical TENS device.
Q: I What is a TENS device?
A: A TENS device uses electricity
to induce neuron stimulation. The process is referred to as Transcutaneous
Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). Most TENS devices use a DC
current from a self-contained battery source, although AC is also used.
The most desirable wave form is a matter of continued evaluation and
discussion.
Q: How Does the LISS CES work?
A: The actual physiology of the
phenomenon is poorly understood. One theory is that the process effects
nerve fibers. The other theory is that the benefits are related to measurable
changes in brain neurochemistry. The LISS CES has been shown to have
a measurable effect on brain neurochemistry.
Q: How long does the effect
from a treatment with the LISS CES last?
A: The duration of the effect of a typical treatment
varies in several ways. Changes in brain neurochemicals have been measured
by testing blood serum and cerebral spinal fluid up to four hours after
treatment. The positive outcome for the patient from a series of treatments
over as little as a two week period can last for an indefinite and unknown
period.
Q: Is the LISS CES safe for
use by children, teenagers and the elderly?
A: The LISS CES uses a maximum of 4 milliamps and
has been shown at the University of Maryland to be safe for use by children.
Seniors have also found it to be safe and efficacious.
Q: Is it easy to use?
A: Yes. The LISS CES has only
one control that works like the volume control on a transistor radio.
- Two pads are placed by the user as shown in diagrams that come with
the device.
- When the pads are in place the user turns on the unit and adjusts
the stimulation level.
- The user can monitor the level as indicated by the number of flashing
lights - similar to a volume meter on a stereo.
- Each session is controlled by a preset session timer that automatically
turns of the LISS CES after a preset time of 10 to 60 minutes.
Q: Do I have to do anything
special when I use the LISS CES?
A: No. You can use it during normal daily activities
like watching TV, or reading a book. Driving a car or operating equipment
during treatment is not recommended although some researchers have reported
doing so with no problem.
|
In the last 10 years I have personally treated over 5,000 patients
where we used the Liss Cranial Stimulator as a routine as part of
our multi-modal approach to chronic pain and depression. Clinically
we often work with patients using some counseling, whatever physical
therapy is indicated, and the daily use of the cranial stimulator.
It is our impression that a significant portion of our improvement
in the depression comes from the use of the cranial stimulator.
